Will the Problogger Conference Change WF4K?

Is change good?

I’ve been toying with the idea of making a few changes on WF4K for some time. I went into the Problogger Conference this weekend with my mind open to change, whether that be big or small. My number one objective was to walk out finally deciding whether I was going to give the blog a complete revamp, including a new name. I didn’t walk out confident that I had made a decision, in fact I walked out much more confused.

I was by no means lost though. I drove home energised, inspired and ready to act on the direction I’ve been wanting to take WF4K.  Here’s what I’d like to change (and I’m really hoping you’ll like these changes too).

More than just wildlife activities.

I adore writing about wildlife education and designing printables and activities to help inspire a love of animals in children, however that’s not all I want to write about.  I’d love to have more room to share other ideas I’m passionate about like camping, nature craft and outdoor activities. Those themes may not quite fit the title of this blog perfectly but loving nature and the outdoors go hand in hand with loving wildlife. I know, because that’s how my love of wildlife was born. Here’s a sneak peek of a nature craft to come.

Halloween craft

Showing more of myself.

I’ve been asked a few times to tell the story of how I came to be so passionate about wildlife education. I’d love to share that story with you and some (funny and slightly cheeky) zoo stories that I’ve had over the years. My blog is written for parents and I’ve decided it’s okay to add some posts that are specifically for you to enjoy. I’m hoping my snippets of embarrassing stories will lend themselves to you telling me your memorable (and perhaps funny) wildlife interactions too.

Feeding a Tassie Devil

 Inspiring products for parents.

This won’t mean more sponsored posts but more posts on books and items I find that have inspired me within the broader theme of nature, wildlife, pets, getting outdoors and camping. I’d love to show off  these earrings, for example,  that I bought for the conference.

These earrings made me feel attached to nature even though I spent two days in a room filling my brain with digital knowledge about blogging. I’d love to write more on what may empower you to feel closer to nature and what we, as parents, might love to find out more about. Requests very welcome!

Fun Wildlife Activities for Kids

WF4K will still be filled with just that, activities for children surrounding wildlife education and appreciation. I want to assure you that this will always be the key feature of  this website. It’s my passion and you couldn’t stop me producing the kind of content I’ve been writing for these past two years because I’ve enjoyed all of it. I’m only changing because I need more variety.

What’s important?

It’s important to me to make more of a difference to the environment through WF4K. I’m not sure how I can do that yet but I do have a few little ideas sprouting in the right side of my brain thanks to a wonderful presentation at the Problogger Conference by Clare Bowditch. I’ll keep you posted.

It turns out that the conference did do its job by cementing the future content direction of WF4K. My ultimate conundrum was the name of the blog. I’m still yet to make a final decision on a complete blog name change. For now, I’m content with finally letting myself out of the box that I’ve kept myself in for two years. I’m just hoping you’ll join me for the changes.

What are you looking forward to seeing on WF4K?

I think it all sounds great and like you’ve found a good direction to go on. I don’t think that the name of your blog needs to change for you to include these though because they do go hand in hand. And, at the end of the day, people will really only read articles and information that they are interested in or have a need for at the time and what the blog is called will never change that. IMHO anyway haha :)

    Hi Penny,
I love every one of your ideas and I think they would work together really well .You could also add others in when inspiration strikes! You’ve obviously put a lot of thought into it all. May I suggest including some sort of share page for your followers to exchange ideas/experiences and photos of anything that was inspired by your posts or that fit in with your general theme ? Couldn’t help myself! I had to think of some names … “‘Wild World” “Into the Wild” “Wild life for Everyone” “Wild Wisdom”

    • Penny Whitehouse says

That’s a lovely idea Vicki. In blog land, I think it’s called a linky. I would love to start a linky but sometimes I worry that no one will link up. I hate rejection! I have an instagram idea that I’d like to try first and then I’ll create a linky (love the creative names!). Are you on instagram?

I agree with all previous posters! I can’t wait to read what else you have to say. I agree that your blog name doesn’t need to change, but it’s your blog – if it makes you feel better about it, go for it! And I just wanted to add, thank you for the great ideas, and the things you pin on Pinterest too!

    • Penny Whitehouse says

Thank you Leah for taking the time to comment. You’re so sweet. I love Pinterest, am I following you? Give me your printerest account and I’ll check that I am. :)

I think you have something very special here Penny. I’m a great fan. And I believe you can extend it easily to fit that in while still staying true to your blog content…because camping and nature go hand in hand. Would love to hear more about you and your story. Excited to see the changes as you move forward x

    • Penny Whitehouse says

Oh Kell, I just wanted to give you a big old squeeze after reading your comment. Thank you. It really meant a lot to me.

If I may, you might rethink changing the name just from a technical standpoint. This would mean starting from scratch with your search engine rankings. Yours is a lifestyle blog. All of the things you mention are part of that lifestyle. Your current name would be appropriate and give focus to your posts. Good luck.

    • Penny Whitehouse says

Thanks Dave. I’m definitely taking that into consideration. It’s one of the main reasons I haven’t changed yet. I really liked your comment about lifestyle, that really did help me see the name change in a different light.

On another note, it’s nice to see a guy here for a change!

It seems so clear to me now – keep the name, keep the URL, and include more awesome content! I think that lovers of WLF4K will love the changes, I know that I will :)
It was a true DELIGHT to meet you in real life at the conference, I’m so glad that I got the chance to and hope that I will again one day x

    • Penny Whitehouse says

It was a delight to meet YOU Kylie. You have such a positive vibe around you. I felt like I was sucking it up all weekend. You’re so sweet and so lovely. I never felt awkward around you once. Little O was soooooo cute too (even when he was smelly!) :p

  7. says

I think all these changes sound wonderful Penny. And yes keep the name :) I really like hearing about the person behind the blog so I’m looking forward to hearing some of your stories about how you came to be so passionate about nature.

    • Penny Whitehouse says

Oh Kate, some of the stories are hilarious. Today though wasn’t so great. I was pooed on by a baby crocodile called fluffy. I’m not sure who was more embarrassed!

  8. says

Penny, you’re a smart chica and I know that with whatever changes you make, they’ll only be for the better. It was so great to catch up with you and laugh like “old times”
    Here’s to bigger things for WF4K! x

    • Penny Whitehouse says

It was so good to catch up with YOU! I wish you lived closer. I know we’d be catching up all the time… Either that or I’d be stalking you.

    • Penny Whitehouse says

Thanks Miss Jody. Hope you’re well. I’m going to visit soon. Sorry I’ve been such a stranger. It’s been, well, super busy. I think I need a holiday just to visit my fave blogs!

“camping, nature craft and outdoor activities” all sound like they would still fit with your current name. I like the name you have now and you have all ready built an audience. I would say add the new content but keep the title. Maybe your personal stories don’t exactly go with your title (but maybe they do) but that doesn’t really matter. It doesn’t sound like your personal stories are going to be the focus of the blog and one of the nice things about a personal blog is you can break the rules and post whatever you want every now and then. I love your blog and I believe the changes aren’t really changes at all but wonderful additions. Have fun!

    • Penny Whitehouse says

Thanks so much for your thoughts and positive comment. It made me smile. You’re such a sweetie and yes, I’ll break the rules from time to time. I’m such a rebel!

I really like your blog Penny, it’s so different to anything else thats out there and a reminder to us all to stop and take a look at the world around us and teach our kids to appreciate wildlife. To me protecting the environment is key to looking after endangered animals and I don’t consider that outside of your blog title at all :-) Glad you learned lots at pro blogger, perhaps next year I’ll be brave enough to sign up and come along too :-)

I don’t think you have to change the name of your blog to encompass of the ideas you have above. The name of your blog is a guide to the general content, but I don’t think it has to restrict you from writing on slightly broader topic areas. Your passion will show through regardless. :)

Just came across a pin that led me to your blog . How amazing! I am an extension educator working with 4-H youth. I have great resources at my finger tips but you offer a refreshing look at nature. Our camp theme this year was “Living the Wildlife” we learned about leaves, insects, birds, recycling, tracks and even made duck calls. What fun it is to be outdoors I love your name, I think you are reminding us wildlife is more than animals and animals are more than mammals. Look forward to reading more.

I love all your ideas. I don’t think you should limit yourself. If it’s nature, wildlife, kids, crafts, a funny zookeeper story, or the great outdoors it is all appropriate to your blog. You go girl! I would recommend that you keep your blog name the same. You might lose a lot of people if you change names. I am your newest follower on Pinterest too.

Thanks so much Mary for the lovely comment and support. I really, really appreciate it. Everyone’s comments have warmed my heart!
